Our Story
A Legacy of Healthcare Leadership
CalHPA was founded in 2026 by a coalition of California physicians, nurses, and allied health professionals who recognized the need for a unified voice for health professionals everywhere. What began as a focused California advocacy group has grown into an internationally recognized organization that shapes healthcare policy, sets accreditation standards, and delivers world-class continuing education to members worldwide.
CalHPA champions landmark legislation, establishes nationally recognized accreditation frameworks, and has built one of the most respected continuing education programs available to health professionals globally. Our story is a testament to what health professionals can achieve when they stand together.
CalHPA founded in Sacramento, CA — open to health professionals worldwide
Launched inaugural accreditation program and online CME platform
Established international membership program welcoming global health professionals
Formed the CalHPA Foundation for healthcare workforce scholarships
Launched first annual CalHPA Conference in Sacramento
Opened membership to health professionals in all 50 states and internationally

Leadership Team
Dr. Maria Reyes, MD
President & Chief Executive Officer
Dr. Reyes brings 25 years of clinical and executive leadership experience. A board-certified internist, she previously served as CMO at UC Davis Health before joining CalHPA.
James Thornton, MHA
Chief Operating Officer
James oversees CalHPA's day-to-day operations, membership services, and regional chapter network. He holds a Master's in Health Administration from USC.
Dr. Priya Nair, PhD
Chief Education Officer
Dr. Nair leads CalHPA's continuing education and accreditation divisions. She is a nationally recognized expert in healthcare workforce development.
Robert Castillo, JD
Chief Policy & Advocacy Officer
Robert directs CalHPA's legislative strategy and government relations. He has over 20 years of experience in California healthcare law and policy.
Dr. Angela Kim, DNP
Board Chair
Dr. Kim is a Doctor of Nursing Practice and serves as Chief Nursing Officer at Cedars-Sinai. She has chaired the CalHPA Board since 2022.
David Okonkwo, MBA
Chief Financial Officer
David manages CalHPA's financial operations and strategic investments. He brings 18 years of nonprofit financial leadership in the healthcare sector.
